An app called “Hengam Restock" helped merchants inform their customers that their products are back in stock. In 2 years, more than 200,000 products were back-in-stock through our app, and customers were notified. This method worked for the stores and increased their sales by more than 15%, but we were looking for a way that could help them sell better and solve their other problems, like inventory management. We searched for a few weeks and found a good solution. Subscription . If the stores could sell their products on a subscription basis, there would be no need to guess how many products to keep in the warehouse. Before that, this number could be much less than the required amount or more than the required amount. Each of these has its problems. With this method, they know with a good approximation how many people will buy a product next month, and they supply the same amount of stock. On the other hand, they can even guess how much income they will have next month and spend accordingly. At that time, there were several apps for this work in Shopify, but these apps had several fundamental problems. 1. Working with these apps was not easy; sometimes, merchants needed to hire a third party to help them use these apps. 2. They were costly and intended only for large stores, while This problem was also the problem of small and medium stores and they needed this product too. 3. A store's needs in the subscription can be very diverse. Some want to create a subscription box, some need a landing page for subscription products, some want a membership and loyal customer club, etc. These apps did not have strong support, subscription knowledge, and customer success manager to help the merchant in these ways. At best, there was simple support that only dealt with fundamental problems. All of this made us think of creating our subscription app; thus, the "Subify subscription" was born. The app is simple, and everyone can easily use it; it has a reasonable price, and merchants can start working without paying any initial amount. The west side of San Francisco is home to some of San Francisco’s most beloved recreational destinations — Golden Gate Park, the Presidio, Lake Merced, Fort Funston and Ocean Beach, among others. But many of these natural attractions — and others like Mt. Sutro and Twin Peaks — are also geographic barriers that can make travel to and from the west side of the city more difficult.

This may be one reason why three out of four people traveling within, to or from the west side do so by personal car. It’s also why we need to make sure there are more safe, reliable and affordable transportation options between west side neighborhoods and other citywide destinations.

This month we released an interactive website, San Francisco’s West Side on the Move, describing local experiences, transportation challenges and solutions in neighborhoods from the Richmond and the Sunset to Lake Merced, Parkside and West Portal. The website pulls together our latest efforts to make it safer and more convenient for people on the west side to get where they need to go. Our goal is for people who want to take Muni to have reliable and frequent service; for those who want to walk or bike to have safe streets; and for people who drive to face less congestion.

Beyond the geographic barriers that impede west side travel, other transportation challenges on the west side include street closures caused by construction projects and frequent closure of the Great Highway for sand removal. Street transformations that began during the pandemic, like Slow Streets and the closure of some roads in Golden Gate Park to cars, also altered some residents' trip patterns. We've been listening to and collaborating with community members on the west side about how to better address these challenges and meet their needs as well.

San Francisco’s West Side on the Move describes the solutions we’ve implemented or plan to implement soon on the west side. Our Transit team has already made major strides in improving west side Muni lines like the 38 Geary and 5R Fulton Rapid using tools like red transit lanes, bus bulbs and smart traffic signals. Travel times on the 38 Geary are up to 20% faster than they were previously, and travel times on the 5R Fulton Rapid are up to 12% faster. We’ve also improved travel times on the 1 California and the N Judah.

While the L Taraval Improvement Project is still in construction, it has already delivered important safety benefits. On the completed section of the L Taraval, which finished on time and on budget, pedestrian injuries decreased by 60%. Improvements like this are vitally important in all San Francisco communities, and especially so in this part of the city which is home to so many older adults and families with small children.

When it comes to reducing congestion, we are adjusting signal timing to keep up with changing traffic patterns, adding turn lanes and restrictions in key locations and providing more loading zones in commercial areas to reduce double-parking. We also monitor the network for opportunities to improve bottlenecks, such as the recently re-opened MLK Drive between Chain of Lakes Drive and Sunset Boulevard.

To slow down traffic on residential streets and make walking and bicycling safer and more enjoyable, we’re using traffic calming tools like speed bumps to slow vehicle speeds. In 2021, the SFTMTA invested in a comprehensive package of traffic calming measures in the Outer Sunset to address local concerns. Monitoring indicates that traffic speed and volume was reduced, which ideally creates safer conditions for all road users.

While the Slow Streets program has provided valuable, safe routes for people who walk, bike and roll, we've heard from residents that they're not working well for every community, particularly the Sunset. There, the Sunset Neighborways program is replacing Slow Streets to create a network of safe streets for active transportation. The emphasis of Sunset Neighborways will be on slowing down traffic to improve safety, rather than restricting it. In the Richmond, Anza Street is a key corridor for biking and active transportation, and in response to community requests for a better east-west bike route through the neighborhood, we added bike lanes and safety improvements like speed cushions to slow traffic and create a street that can be easily and safely shared by cyclists and drivers. 

By releasing San Francisco’s West Side on the Move, the SFMTA hopes to deepen its dialogue with west side community members about what’s working well and what can be improved when it comes to keeping the west side moving. Please share your ideas by emailing WestsideProjects@SFMTA.com

We’ve recently released version 3.0 of mirrord - it’s the first version of the product that we believe can provide daily value for backend developers. mirrord is a free, open-source (MIT) product that cuts your development loops by making it easier and faster for your local code to “meet” your cloud environment. mirrord lets you “plug” your local process into your Kubernetes cluster. When you run your process with mirrord, it completely wraps your process in the context of the corresponding service on your cluster - it essentially proxies all of your process’ input/output to the remote pod, from network traffic to file access to environment variables, so that you can keep running your process from the familiar comfort of your local environment, but with input, configuration, and state from the cloud. It's long-only for now, as the goal is to look for great long-term businesses to invest in. When I was building Crewcharge, an email marketing tool - I needed to build a feature to show a preview of how the email looks. I was searching for inspiration and realised most email preview tools only showed you the email in full screen when it's opened as if all emails get opened. While this happened, my friend who is a digital marketer sent an email to himself and grabbed 3 phones around the house. When I asked why, he replied that most people don't even open the emails and read it from the notification bars. Another friend missed a job interview because he swiped on the notification thinking it was a promotion. After a survey it was clear than more 75% of the people do the same and that most email marketing or email outreach tools are optimizing for wrong placements. I built this as a chrome extension so it would be open to existing email marketing and email outreach tools in the market. It currently integrates with Google Workspace, Hubspot, Apollo io, Snov io, Mailchimp, Sendinblue, Google Sheets / Notion / Airtable. The way it works is it parses the dom for the email text (or HTML), subject line, Sender name and creates the previews in a new tab where you can explore how the email looks on Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, Androids, iPhones. Future integrations in pipeline include Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Instantly, Lemlist, Outreach io. Launched on Producthunt reaching #1 product of the day and reached around 450 users, a lot of us discover us on Google when they search for email preview or email testing tools. The vision of inboxpirates is to also give you a good email score to get higher response and open rates, using NLP and the core version is very basic with some bugs. Linen communities is a Slack/Discord alternative that is Google-searchable and customer-support friendly. Today we are open-sourcing Linen and launching Linen communities. You can now create a community on Linen.dev without syncing it from Slack and Discord! I initially launched Linen as a tool to sync Slack and Discord conversations to a search engine-friendly website. As I talked to more community managers, I quickly realized that Slack and Discord communities don't scale well and that there needs to be a better tool, especially for open-source knowledge-based communities. Traditionally these communities have lived on forums that solved many of these problems. However, from talking to communities, I found most of them preferred chat because it feels more friendly and modern. We want to bring back a bunch of the advantages of forums while maintaining the look and feel of a chat-based community. Slack and Discord are closed apps that are not indexable by the internet, so a lot of content gets lost. Traditional chat apps are not search engine friendly because most search engines have difficulty crawling JS-heavy sites. We built Linen to be search engine friendly, and our communities have over 30,000 pages/threads indexed by google. Our communities that have synced their Slack and Discord conversations under their domain have additional 40,000 pages indexed. We accomplish this by conditionally server rendering pages based on whether or not the browser client is a crawler bot. This way, we can bring dynamic features and a real-time feel to Linen and support search engines. Most communities become a support channel, and managing this many conversations is not what these tools are designed for. I've seen community admins hack together their own syncs and internal devices to work to stay on top of the conversations. This is why we created a feed view, a single view for all the threads in all the channels you care about. We added an open and closed state to every thread so you can track them similarly to GitHub issues or a ticketing system. This way, you and your team won't miss messages and let them drop. We also allow you to filter conversations you are @mentioned as a way of assigning tickets. I think this is a good starting point, but there is a lot more we can improve on. How chat is designed today is inherently interrupt-driven and disrupts your team's flow state. Most of the time, when I am @mentioning a team member, I actually don't need them to respond immediately. But I do want to make sure that they do eventually see it. This is why we want to redesign how the notification system works. We are repurposing @mentions to show up in your feed and your conversation sections and adding a !mention. A @mention will appear in your feed but doesn't send any push notifications, whereas a !mention will send a notification for when things need a real-time synchronous conversation. This lets you separate casual conversations from urgent conversations. When everything is urgent, nothing is. For this project gathered chess positions from some well-known chess players with a lot of games. (Usually ~25k games and 1M+ positions. The most for any player was GM Aman Hambleton with 1.8M positions indexed.) With each board position I create a probability distribution of moves the player has made from that position. Then, I simply draw from that distribution (with sampling temperature) to choose a move. As long as there's at least one game with a given position, you can keep playing. You'll see that it's pretty easy to get "out of book", where you've reached a novel position. It is possible to indirectly model a player's behavior throughout the game, so we can guess what moves a player might make in that position. Show HN: Circumflex, browse HN in your terminal Some two years ago, I found myself spending a lot of time in the terminal between learning vim and discovering new command line tools. I was surprised to see that the niche of HN clis was (relatively) small, and so I decided to write my own command line tool for browsing HN called `circumflex`(`clx`). `clx` is written in Go using Bubble Tea[1]. You can read the comment section or the linked article in reader mode in the pager `less`. Using `lesskey` to add custom keybindings, the replies can be collapsed and expanded in real-time (but not individual replies, only all replies at once). Behind the scenes I am appending invisible unicode characters to each line so that I can use the custom keybindings to filter them out. The same technique is used to allow for jumping between top-level comments. I spent a lot of time thinking about syntax highlighting and finding relevant bits to highlight while also not going overboard with colors. The end result is highlighting of things I find useful for providing context in the comment section, like indicating parent poster and original poster, coloring references, coloring indentations as well as formatting YC startups. Other quality of life features include adding submissions as favorites (it is stored as a pretty-printed json so you can check it into your vcs to allow for readable diffs). Follow the link for details, a screencast (4 min), and download. (this is paid feature, but there is a no signup 7 day trial so you can play with it) In the past I have used plain text formats (like .taskpaper and .markdown) for my apps. I've grown sick of seeing and parsing syntax characters, so this time around I am taking a rich text approach. Rich text looks clean, but editing is problematic. You don't have precise control/visibility into the formatting. It's hidden behind the text. There are no formatting characters to guide you like you have in Markdown. This is particularly problematic when you want to insert text at formatting boundaries. Bike solves this with "typing affinity". This lets you precisely specify which formatting to use at those boundaries. It does this by adding an extra text caret state at these boundaries. This extra state allows you to point the text caret upstream or downstream to the formatting you want. Other interesting features include: • Link Buttons: Insert a dedicated "open" button after each link so there is no conflict between editing link text and opening the link. • Keyboard Centric Formatting Popover: Remember a single keyboard shortcut and have full keyboard access to formatting commands. No mouse needed. • Visible Typing Attributes: Show hidden typing attribute state (when it cannot be visually determined by looking at surrounding text) as part of the text caret. We don’t ask for your email or password, and instead authenticate by asking users to sign a transaction with their Ethereum wallet; we ask for usernames to give a more familiar and user-friendly experience for people that haven’t purchased ENS or other crypto domain names. At the moment, we’re storing user data in Firestore instead of on-chain because the current decentralized channels are too expensive or slow. This also has the added benefit of making the app completely free to use. Show HN: Earn 9.62% on US Treasury I Bonds on Yotta Hey all My name is Adam, and I’m a co-founder at Yotta (YC S20), an app that uses behavioral psychology to help people save money by making saving exciting. We built a feature on Yotta where you can earn 9.62% APY via US Treasury I Bonds. (https://ift.tt/Rnasdyw) This is an absurd yield for a security that is backed by the full faith and credit of the United States Government - the strongest guarantee you can get. For comparison, most high-yield savings accounts with FDIC coverage are paying ~2%. The backstory: I Bonds were established by the US Treasury in 1998 to provide returns linked to inflation to protect consumer purchasing power. The rate on I Bonds is determined from the last six months of CPI data and is adjusted twice per year. Inflation is typically around 2% per year, so I Bonds have never been relevant since the rate was never that attractive. Inflation spiked in 2022 driving I Bonds reached a record high yield of 9.62% APY. If you buy them by October 31st, you lock in this rate for six months from the purchase date. In the last 12 months, around $27B has been deposited as a result of the insanely high yield. This compares to $348m in 2020. Note that you have to hold I Bonds for at least a year and you forgo 3 the last three months of earned interest if you redeem before five years. You can deposit a max of $10k into I Bonds per calendar year. So if you can get 9.62% APY on a government backed security when savings accounts are yielding 2%, why doesn’t everyone have I Bonds? A few reasons. 1. Most people have never heard of them. 2. People don’t want to tie up cash for a year in a CD-like product. 3. The only way to buy I Bonds has been on the world’s worst website, Treasury Direct. You have to fill out long forms, click on a virtual keyboard to type your password, can’t use the back button, and make one mistake and you get locked out of your account. The whole thing is a colossal pain in the ass. To solve 1) and 3), we wrapped an easy-to-use UI to buy I Bonds within Yotta. Users opt into Yotta creating a Treasury Direct account on their behalf, and we automate the painful part - interacting with Treasury Direct on the backend. This enables us to provide a great customer experience, making it easy for people to get the 9.62%. If anyone wants to control their Treasury Direct directly without Yotta, they can request it, and we will transfer over their account to no longer be managed by Yotta. I started this project while I was working at JetBrains where I helped the PyCharm team to improve support for Jupyter notebooks. As I was in close contact with many ML devs (who used PyCharm) I was able to see their struggle with running ML workflows. Unlike traditional dev workflows, ML workflows are difficult to run on a local machine (due to the lack of memory, more CPUs/GPUs, etc). This is why people often have to use remote machines (e.g. via SSH), or adopt one of the end-to-end MLOps platforms. Using remote machines is not difficult but it is tedious and requires a lot of manual actions. Using MLOps platforms on the other hand automates the manual work but requires the use of an opinionated interface, which often kills developer productivity. Imagine, if you could run your ML workflows the very same way as you do it locally, but they would actually run in the cloud. And you wouldn’t need to worry about provisioning infrastructure, setting up the environment, etc. I’m excited to show you dstack, an open-source tool that does exactly that. It’s a command-line utility that allows you to run any workflows while it provisions infrastructure, setup the environment, and copies code/data for you. An app called “Hengam Restock" helped merchants inform their customers that their products are back in stock. In 2 years, more than 200,000 products were back-in-stock through our app, and customers were notified. This method worked for the stores and increased their sales by more than 15%, but we were looking for a way that could help them sell better and solve their other problems, like inventory management. We searched for a few weeks and found a good solution. Subscription . If the stores could sell their products on a subscription basis, there would be no need to guess how many products to keep in the warehouse. Before that, this number could be much less than the required amount or more than the required amount. Each of these has its problems. With this method, they know with a good approximation how many people will buy a product next month, and they supply the same amount of stock. On the other hand, they can even guess how much income they will have next month and spend accordingly. At that time, there were several apps for this work in Shopify, but these apps had several fundamental problems. 1. Working with these apps was not easy; sometimes, merchants needed to hire a third party to help them use these apps. 2. They were costly and intended only for large stores, while This problem was also the problem of small and medium stores and they needed this product too. 3. A store's needs in the subscription can be very diverse. Some want to create a subscription box, some need a landing page for subscription products, some want a membership and loyal customer club, etc. These apps did not have strong support, subscription knowledge, and customer success manager to help the merchant in these ways. At best, there was simple support that only dealt with fundamental problems. All of this made us think of creating our subscription app; thus, the "Subify subscription" was born. In recent months, users started to ask us more frequently about the ability to run algorithms on a part of graph stored in database - subgraph. Now to do this, we extended the implementation of C API we had and brought to you the graph project feature that enables running algorithms on a specific subset of a graph stored in the database. You can now do graph analysis with PageRank, degree centrality, betweenness centrality, or any other algorithm on subgraphs without any additional adjustments. Before you had to create new query procedure. You can fire up a graph machine learning algorithm, such as Temporal graph networks and split the dataset inside the query to do training and validation without splitting the dataset programmatically. And last but not least, you can use your graphics card to run one of cuGraph's algorithms on subgraph in terms of seconds. It has a T-SQL inspired syntax with support for functions and procedures. It can be used stand-alone as a SQL engine or with a server allowing for persistence and replication to other connected clients. Performance are nothing near sqlite of course but that's beside the point. It’s a small database engine that can run in a web app as a way to store session data, do small calculations on a web worker, store the document/data the user is editing or facilitate “multiplayer” feature by broadcasting the queries the web app is running.
