The first Muni Metro Fix-It Week of 2023 was a resounding success in March, and it’s also the first Fix-It Week since the SFMTA launched the Central Subway in early January of this year. Here is a behind-the-scenes video recap. Fix-It Week is the SFMTA’s quarterly effort to optimize work time by closing Muni Metro early for critical maintenance. The SFMTA’s Maintenance of Way (MOW) teams did an excellent job maintaining the subway and preventing future breakdowns. 

Fix-It Week helps the Muni Metro get a 20% improvement in speed and about a 20% improvement in reliability in the subway. It takes fewer minutes to take the N Judah from the Outer Sunset to Embarcadero now than it did in 2019. 

 From March 16 to March 22, 2023, the Muni Metro Subway between Embarcadero and West Portal closed at 9:30 p.m. to provide SFMTA maintenance crews an extended window to perform underground infrastructure improvement work that cannot be completed during the usual overnight windows. During the subway closure, buses provided substitute service for Muni Metro lines on the surface and connected all stops on Market Street.

The goal of Fix-It Week is to make Muni metro subway operations more reliable, ensure safety, and improve the customer experience. Nine MOW teams, Track, Cable Car, Motive Power, Maintenance Engineering, Mechanical Systems, Overhead Lines, Underground, Paint Shop and Signal, were involved in the maintenance work. 

Major maintenance work includes: 

• Track replacement and reinstallation from the Ferry Portal to the Van Ness Crossover 
• Mechanical systems cleaning, maintenance and installation  
• Signal repairs and upgrades, including the demolition of old train control system racks, equipment and wiring 
•  Track fastener and subway lighting surveys, and drain cleaning around switches  
• Overhead Line inspections and Overhead Section Break hardware adjustments 
• Debris removal and traction power substation inspections 
• Cable Car maintenance and repairs

The SFMTA teams completed over 2,000 hours of maintenance and inspections over the seven night shutdown. They were able to perform 161 feeder operations, replace more than 125 bulbs for trackway lighting in multiple locations, renew 750 feet of Overhead Contact System contact wire, replace eight blue light phones and inspect approximately 8,000 track fastener plates from the Ferry Portal to Powell Station.

A support team was also contributed to the success of Fix-It Week. These staffers helped coordinate maintenance work, upheld all safety standards and ensured that subway service resumed on time every day. 

The SFMTA will continue to keep the Muni Metro system in a state of good repair. The next Fix-It Week is scheduled for July 2023, and we thank you for your patience and understanding while we do this vital work.

Fortunately, ChatGPT arrived just in time. After experimenting with it, I discovered that it generates high-quality documentation for code files, even better than what I could produce manually. This realization led me to develop Code-Narrator, a client that simplifies the documentation process. Code-Narrator ( https://ift.tt/Io3wuv2 ) utilizes GPT-4 to analyze your code files and automatically generate documentation. The tool is language-agnostic and has been tested with TypeScript, GraphQL, Solidity, C#, Kotlin, and more. As long as the files are in plain text, Code-Narrator should work seamlessly. The primary goal of Code-Narrator is to ease the documentation process for developers, transforming them from writers to editors. While developers are still responsible for verifying the accuracy of the generated documentation, the initial writing is handled by the AI. If GPT-4 produces incorrect documentation, it typically indicates that the code needs clarification, or a brief comment should be added to guide the AI. A general rule of thumb is that if GPT-4 cannot comprehend the code, it may be too complex for the next developer. However, Code-Narrator is constrained by GPT-4's 8192-token limit, which can be problematic for extensive code files. Those with access to the gpt-4-32k variant should expect better results. Upon its first run, Code-Narrator creates a configuration file by analyzing your project, and then prompts you to review it for accuracy. History mode allows you to go back in time and see wind generation and weather conditions for a particular date and time. Prediction mode lets you see what wind farms are estimated to be generating using current wind conditions and model based on historic generation and wind speeds. If you click the "sparkle" button on the map you'll get to see what the upcoming 3.6GW Dogger Bank wind farm is estimated to generate if it was operational today. Constantly switching contexts was a big pain for me and I badly needed something more practical to work with multiple clusters, ideally simultaneously. At that time everyone was talking about Rust and I really wanted to try it out. I then found Tauri, a framework to build GUI apps with Rust + JavaScript. I was sold. I learned Rust and built the app I always wanted to use. Fast, lightweight and with the ability to connect to multiple clusters simultaneously. Uses agent to decide win/loss Yeah... so I know some software development concepts well I haven't written any code in 10 years, so like half the time was just getting a development setup. At first it suggested PyCharm and honestly it wasted a lot of time. Eventually I got VS Code and GPT just seems to understand it so much better. The real secret to getting good responses with GPT-4 during this I found is to restart the conversation fresh with a complete description of what you need (2-3 paragraphs of detail is great) and the rest as code. [detailed description of what you need, make sure it's detailed and specific add examples if possible] #### [insert all the code, the more you can fit the better] That first code block it gives you back on the first output is the cleanest by far. If there is an error and you submit it back in the same chat conversation, it just gets diluted/saturated over time, hallucinations go up etc. So if there is a bug rather than continue in the same convo, repeat this process in a brand new conversation. Each time it gives a much cleaner, fresher look at the code and goals needed. If your codeblock is really small then this isn't so important, but I'm trying to maximize the amount of code per prompt for best responses. I also make sure to split files by concerns so they don't get too big for the prompt window otherwise it's annoying. #### And lastly the other interesting thing about this project is this simulates an Agent loop where it is constantly trying to determine if the player won or lost, decide what the next most cohesive step is based on the human feedback (click emoji) and looping it. Actually that was my main interest for the project and I just wanted to get something published as a secondary goal. I made a trivia website using GPT3 a while back just to have something to play with. My initial interest was to see if I could get structured responses to build a UI around, and if I could get the LLM to refer back to what piece of text it used to create questions and answers with. The initial results were pretty good, but not good enough. Fast forward a few months, GPT 3.5 was released to the public and I was released from my work. I decided to pick this up again and have been making some changes. - I've generated almost 3000 questions. - I initially only let signed up users generate questions due to cost concerns. Since 3.5 is much cheaper, I've opened up the question generation for everybody. - I built a prompt comparison tool so I could tweak the prompt to get better responses. - I've added some more data to the questions. This includes a more free form explanation to the correct answer (separate from the references), and categories for all questions. - I've been working on a question improvement process. This means I collect issues, generate new variations of the question and let people vote on them. Voting and question improvement is currently only available to signed in users. I have many more ideas I'd like to explore, but I would appreciate your feedback and would be happy to answer any questions about the site or its development. This spreadsheet does not attempt to compete with a typical FIRE spreadsheet or tools like YNAB/Mint, it is about capturing the big picture once a month and essentially taking a snapshot of my financial health. Show HN: Matic: a reimagined robot vacuum that work Hello HN friends, We’re Matician, and here’s why we built Matic. We wanted to live in an always clean home but were tired of always cleaning. We’d spend hours cleaning, but with kids and pets, the floors never stayed clean for long. We tried all the various robovacs, but they actually made things worse. They chewed up wires, got lost searching for the dock, and one even tore up an expensive rug after getting stuck on it for an hour! And we weren’t the only ones — friends and family had similar frustrations. So we decided to build something new from the ground up. Something that would just… work. As it turns out, robovacs are chock-full of sensors. Some actually boast about this in their marketing, leading customers to believe that sensors mean sophistication. But we live in homes built by humans and for humans, and humans don’t have Lidar or radar. Instead, we have an incredibly powerful perception system: two eyes and a brain. So, we decided to build a robot that sees like a human, so it can clean like a human. We gave the robot eyes (RGB cameras) and built its brain (state-of-the-art algorithms). We developed a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system from scratch, enabling the robot to build a photo-realistic 3D map of a home, move around with precision, and always be able to locate itself. Visual input also meant we could develop semantic understanding, so the robot actually understands what should be cleaned and what should not be cleaned. And we doubled down on privacy along the way. From day one, we committed to processing all data on the device, so that no video or audio ever leaves our home. This was hard to do, but it was simply non-negotiable. We shouldn’t have to sacrifice privacy for convenience. And we didn’t stop with the software. We also built purposeful hardware to take full advantage of the powerful perception system, working together to optimize cleaning. This meant reinventing the vacuum and mopping system from the bottom up and tightly integrating hardware and software for super-effective cleaning. It took some time to get here (5 years, 6 months to be precise), but we’re proud of what we’ve built in Matic. Show HN: Skip the SSO Tax, access your user data with OSS As the former CTO of an Insurtech and Fintech startup I always had the “pleasure” to keep regulators and auditors happy. Think of documenting who has access to what, quarterly access reviews, yearly audits and so on… Like many others we couldn’t justify the Enterprise-plan for every SaaS tool to simply get access to SSO and SCIM/SAML APIs. For Notion alone the cost would have nearly doubled to $14 per user per month. That’s insane! Mostly unknown to people, SSO Tax also limits access to APIs that are used for managing user access (SCIM/SAML). This has proven to be an incredibly annoying roadblock that prevented me from doing anything useful with our user data: - You want to download the current list of users and their permissions? Forget about it! - You want to centrally assign user roles and permissions? Good luck with that! - You want to delete user accounts immediately? Yeah right, like that's ever gonna happen! It literally cost me hours to update our access matrix at the end of every quarter for our access reviews and manually assigning user accounts and permissions. I figured, there must be a better way than praying to the SaaS gods to miraculously make the SSO Tax disappear (and open up SCIM/SAML along the way). That’s why I sat down a few weeks ago and started building OpenOwl ( https://ift.tt/1nAubKv ). It allows me to just plug in my user credentials and automatically download user lists, including permissions from SaaS tools. Granted, OpenOwl is still a work in progress, and it's not perfect. At the moment it's limited to non-SSO login flows and covers only 7 SaaS vendors. My favorite part is that you can configure integrations as “recipes”. The goal was for anybody to be able to add new integrations (IT managers and developers alike). Therefore you ideally don’t even have to write any new code, just tell OpenOwl how the new SaaS vendor works. What do you think? Why do we need all these libraries and runtimes with all the overhead, compatibility issues and other headaches, when it's just some math to be executed? So I made a compiler that simply converts the model into plain source code with no dependencies, and it actually solved all my deployment problems. Now I'm curious if it can help anyone else too. Through the link you can submit your model file (Keras h5, onnx soon to be supported), and I'll use my compiler to convert it into source code for you. It might not work for everyone, but I'll use your input to make the compiler better and hopefully turn it into a full-fledged product someday. At that time, Datree consisted of a CLI tool to detect Kubernetes misconfigurations during the development process (locally or in the CI/CD), unlike the version I present today in which the enforcement happens in production. We built the CLI tool because we detected a big problem among Kubernetes operators: Misconfigurations. Kubernetes is extremely complex and flexible, which makes it very easy to poorly configure it in ways that are not secure. And indeed, we talked to dozens of Kubernetes operators who suffered from various problems, starting with failed audits, all the way to downtime in production, all because of misconfigurations. Our solution was simple: Give the developers the means to shift-left security testing during the development process with a CLI tool that can be integrated into the CI/CD. We thought this was the best way to approach the problem: It is easiest to fix misconfigurations in the development process before they are deployed to production, it prevents context-switching and relieves resources from the DevOps team. While the CLI tool was very popular among the open-source community (it got over 6000 stars on GitHub), we soon realized that CI/CD enforcement is not enough. As we talked with Datree’s users, we realized we had made a fundamental mistake: We thought of misconfiguration prevention in technical terms rather than organizational terms. Indeed, from a technical point of view, it makes sense to shift-left Kubernetes security. But when considering the organizational structure in which it takes place, it simply isn’t enough. DevOps engineers told us that they love the shift-left concept, but they simply cannot rely on the goodwill of the engineers to run a CLI tool locally or to monitor all the pipelines leading to production. They need governance, something to help them stay in control of the state of their clusters. Moreover, we realized that many companies who use Kubernetes are heavily regulated, and cannot take any chances with their security. Sure, these companies want the engineers to fix misconfigurations during development, but they also want something to make sure that no matter what, their clusters remain misconfiguration-free. Based on this understanding, we developed a new version of Datree that sits on the cluster itself (rather than in the CI/CD) and protects the production environment by blocking misconfigured resources with an admission webhook. It has a centralized policy management solution to enable governance, and native monitoring to get real-time insights into the state of your Kubernetes. Show HN: Goru, an experimental, Go-inspired concurrency library for Ruby Hey folks, wanted to show this off and get feedback. Still early/experimental but there are quite a few concepts I'm excited about here. This project came about while writing a program in Go and loving its approach to concurrency. Being a long-time Rubyist I immediately started to think about what similar concepts might look like in Ruby. I set out with two main design constraints: 1. Lightweight: I didn't want routines to be backed by fibers or threads. Having been involved some in the async project ( https://ift.tt/opHgqDQ ), I had some experience using fibers for concurrency but was curious if they could be avoided. 2. Explicitness: Routine behavior must be written to describe exactly how it is to behave. I always felt like concurrent code was hard to fully understand because of the indirection involved. On the spectrum between tedium and magical I wanted to err more on the side of tedium with Goru. Goru routines are just blocks that are called once for every tick of the reactor. It is up to the developer to implement behavior in terms of a state machine, where on each tick the routine takes some action and then updates the state of the routine for the next tick. This fulfills both design constraints: 1. Because routines are just blocks, they weigh in at about ~345 bytes of memory overhead. 2. Routine behavior is explicit because it is written as a state machine inside the block. Couple more features worth noting: * Goru includes channels for buffered reading/writing (similar to channels in Go). * Goru ships with primitives for non-blocking IO to easily build things like http servers. I’m publicly releasing BraiMax Chess, a web app I built during the last three months; it’s based on a training technique which brought me from around 1700/1800 to 2000 rating (superblitz) on lichess. Here it is: https://ift.tt/bmtwNPU Background story: during lockdown I decided to try and improve at chess, which I was playing online a lot. Bought a few books, tried all the websites and apps I found. This serious study helped a lot in understanding the game better, but didn’t improve my results as much as I hoped. It also was very hard work, and after a few months I stopped having the motivation to continue. Around that time I discovered Puzzle Rush on chess.com; that one was the most enjoyable chess-related thing I could do besides playing games, and it helped with tactics, but I soon plateaued - until I thought about combining that with spaced repetitions. I would manually review the puzzles I had failed, and add them to a rudimentary spaced repetitions system I had hacked together. It was a bit of work, but still enjoyable enough to stick to it; that’s when I started getting noticeably better and better, making fewer blunders, and climbing the rating. Late last year I decided to take some time off after leaving my last job; during the break I felt an itch and decided to create a website which would allow anybody to use the same technique I described above, but in a much easier/integrated way. We thought it would be fun for April 1 to show something a bit on the silly end of things -- we trained our TTS model on "Shakespearean" theatrical voices, and used GPT to generate short plays which are then "acted" out. This lets us show the versatility of our model, that we use in more "serious" settings for generating branded voices for particular languages or accents. It should be noted, the dataset is of our own curation; all voice actors were compensated with full knowledge of being used for TTS and were thrilled to be part of a creative project like this.
